Emotional and Social Education at Yao Dao Secondary School

Development Direction:
In order to cultivate positive thinking among students, our school has focused on "positive education" and "life education" in our past development plans. Through the comprehensive promotion of school atmosphere, activities, and curriculum, significant progress has been made. However, due to the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic, students have had fewer opportunities for in-person classroom learning in recent years, which has raised concerns about their emotional and social needs. In response to this, our school has incorporated "Responsive Classroom Management (RCM)" into our school development plan, aiming to enhance students' social and emotional learning (SEL). By integrating our school's "Yao Dao Qualities" (appreciation, unity, responsibility, gratitude, perseverance, and wisdom), various subject teams work together to establish a positive campus culture and cultivate students' positive thinking to embrace future challenges.

Professional Development for Teachers:
Our school values the professional development of teachers, as we believe that equipping ourselves through training is essential in providing quality education to our students. Our teachers actively participate in a three-day positive education training organized by Geelong Grammar School and the Institute of Positive Education, which have been promoting positive education worldwide for many years. In order to establish a learning community with local schools, our school also participates in the "Positive Education Study Circle" organized by the Bak San Tang Foundation. Through learning knowledge and practical experience, we keep ourselves updated with the latest developments in positive education and broaden our professional horizons.

Comprehensive Care:
At our school, each grade has a "Grade Coordinator" who works closely with the class teachers to address the various needs of students in their growth, guidance, faith, potential, career planning, and academic aspects. Regular meetings are held with school social workers and counselors to provide timely and appropriate support to students. In this academic year, through "Responsive Classroom Management" and class management, we focus on "Teacher Language" and "Place Making" to enhance students' emotional and social abilities. Through annual themes, students experience and cultivate positive thinking at different levels across various subject teams in the school, from Form 1 to Form 2 in "Positive Education" classes and from Form 3 to Form 6 in "Life Education" classes. This enables students to gradually experience and develop positive thinking in their school life.
