J.4 EDB School-based English Project

The school joined the Quality School Improvement Project in collaboration with the Hong Kong Institute of Education Research and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The School Development Officers scheduled regular on-site collaborative lesson planning meetings with all Primary 4 English teachers, the School Curriculum Leader (PSMCD) and the English Panel Chairperson. Various diverse teaching strategies and assessment tools were incorporated to enhance teachers’ professional capacities and improve learning and teaching effectiveness. The team had many inspiring ideas and worked together to produce effective lesson plans and interesting classroom activities to help students learn English. The lessons were effectively taught and lesson observations and post-lesson observation discussion were done in April.

In the lessons, students learnt new English phrases related to resolutions through e-learning tools. They were highly motivated and eager to learn more advanced English vocabulary. They were able to self-learn and help the popular cartoon character, Nobita, make useful resolutions on mind maps. Through peer sharing, they learnt from one another. The design of an exit ticket enhanced the efficiency of the assessment at the end of the lesson. With the help of the engaging speaking and writing activities, students learnt how to set goals and make promising resolutions.

All these thought-provoking activities facilitated students to brainstorm and reflect on how they can improve themselves to be star pupils. They not only gained knowledge in English grammar, but also developed an understanding of important moral values such as diligence, responsibility and commitment.

In 2023-2024, more high-order thinking questions will be incorporated into the lessons in order to stimulate students’ thinking skills. Lesson plans and activities will also be further refined using the valuable knowledge gained from the Quality School Improvement Project.
