- Speak More, Learn More!
At the beginning of the school year, our students make a promise: to speak English actively wherever they are at school or at home. This commitment to speaking English is supported by the school during our monthly English Speaking Weeks. With the chance to win a prize as well as learn more about each other, the children are excited to chat with their friends and teachers during English Speaking Week.
S.K.H Ma On Shan Holy Spirit Primary School encourages students to speak and learn English in lots of different ways. English Speaking Week is just one of the many additions to the rich English-speaking culture at the school. Not only does English Speaking Week help to improve fluency and confidence in speaking English, it is an opportunity for the children to think in English and use authentic language in meaningful conversations about their own ideas, dreams and personal interests.
Every month, a new and interesting topic is chosen for English Speaking Week. So far this year, we have enjoyed discussing topics such as ‘My Favourite Chinese Festival’, ‘My Dream Job’ and ‘Save the Earth’. The children can find the list of topics inside their English Passports. The week before English Speaking Week takes place, the children are provided with a list of questions to help them prepare some answers and think about what they want to talk about. Students are encouraged to start up a conversation with their teachers or English Smarties about the particular topic during recess time.
There are some fun rules applied during ‘English Speaking Week’ to encourage our students to speak more. The children should keep a record of their conversations by collecting stamps or signatures. If the children can get 10 stamps or more in a term, they can get a prize. If they can get more than 20 stamps, they can get a grand prize! Inside their English passports, the children have their own personal report, stating how many stamps they have gathered during the term. Needless to say, the children are enthusiastic about collecting as many stamps as they can. We will continue our English Speaking Weeks as a fun and interesting way to motivate speaking and learning English together.
